Board of Elections 

The Board of Elections of the City of New York is an administration of ten Commissioners, two from each borough, selected by both political parties in the borough, and then appointed by the City Council to serve four-year terms. The Commissioner appoints a bipartisan staff to oversee the daily ongoings of every Board of Elections office in every borough.

Under New York State Election Law, the Board of Elections is responsible for the following:

  • Voter registration, outreach, and processing

  • Maintain and update voter records

  • Processing and verification of candidate petitions/documents

  • Campaign finance disclosures of candidates and campaign committees

  • Recruiting, training, and assigning the various Election Day officers to conduct elections

  • Operate poll site locations

  • Maintain, repair, setup and deploy the Election Day operation equipment

  • Ensure each voter their right to vote at the polls or by absentee ballot

  • Canvassing and certification of the vote

  • Voter education, notification, and dissemination of election information

  • Preparation of maps of various political subdivisions.

You are eligible to serve as a poll worker if you:

Inspector/Poll Clerk/Information Clerk: Must be a registered voter in New York State
Accessibility Clerk: Permanent U.S. resident, New York City resident, and 18 years of age

If you are 17 years old, you may be eligible if your school district participates in a program under Education Law Section 3207-a. Interpreters do not need to be registered voters. You will be assigned within the county where you live. If you live in New York City, you will be assigned within the five boroughs.

What tasks will you perform as a poll worker?

Prepare the polling place for voting

  • Set up the voting equipment

  • Sign-in and process voters

  • Enforce social distancing

  • Demonstrate voting procedures to the voters

  • Sanitize voting equipment

  • Close the polling place

  • Canvass and report the results

  • Assist voter if requested

Will you be paid?

Yes, Poll Workers get paid for training and each day they work.
